Welcome to the community Keyon!

The vision for PremedNetwork.com is to build a community for professional networking, collaborating, and learning for premeds. I believe great things can happen when you bring together bright people with a common purpose.

The purpose is to facilitate the success of future physicians.

Members from Universities throughout the US have joined, including premed students from Harvard, Stanford, and others. It is likely there are premeds from your University who are already members.

Hundreds of internship, research, volunteer and clinical opportunities have been posted, including some by Dr. Keith Bradley (one of the Featured Members). In addition, the team at PremedNetwork.com will be posting about 500 internship/research opportunities this year. Just about every weekday new internship/research opportunities will be posted in the Forum. These are specifically for 2011.

Members tell me there is a lot of potential for the site and that we have a good blueprint. However it seems the biggest issue people have is “Ok, I’m on the site, now what?” LOL.

The truth is that ultimately all I can do is provide “elegant organization.” How the community organizes, collaborates, and interacts is up to the members. So there is some degree of The Drunkard’s Walk (a mathematical term that connotates the role of randomness in life).

The coolest thing I’ve seen members do (and most innovative by the way) is to simply post in their status update what they are looking for (premed related, of course). Each time the member has received replies.

We have so many amazing people in the community: physicians, medical students, advisors, and premeds from all over the country. The collective wisdom is incredible.

(Part Two of Message)

We have recently launched a new page that lists key members. Each of these people has agreed to provide advice to members of the community.

If you click on the page you can see brief bios. Contact them directly but just keep in mind that it might take some time to get back to you as they have a lot of responsibilities. You might notice that some of these people are in countries outside the US. It’s amazing how the Internet connects people in ways which were not possible before.

Right now we are working on putting together a Physician Shadowing program for members. More on that to come later.

Not long ago we launched a listing of premed related events throughout the country. Currently there are premed events in 70 cities around the country. The great thing is that you can upload events yourself. It just takes a couple of minutes and is very easy. Just click on the events tab, then click on “Add an Event”.

Another recent addition is the Leaderboards page. Think of it as a dashboard of what is happening in the community. The great thing is that it’s going to continually get smarter (gotta love technology). Basically, the algorithm evaluates how much members are contributing and how valuable their contributions are.

I think that ultimately everything comes down to people. More specifically, I believe that networking will become more important as we navigate an increasingly complex, interconnected world.

Here’s to a great future!

Best,

Omar
